Hans Carlsten is a Professor at Gothenburg University. He holds a Ph.D. in medicine from Gothenburg University. His work has been published in a number of leading academic journals, including Immunological Reviews, Arthritis & Rheumatism, PNAS, Nature Medicine and Ann Rheumatic Diseases.
The main topic of Professor Carlstens research is to explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which estrogen downregulates arthritis and preserves bone loss during systemic and local inflammation. Since long-term exposure to estrogen has certain side effects in humans selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM) are tested in animal models for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In future clinical trails these drugs will be used for treatment of postmenopausal RA patients.
