Göran Hansson is a Professor of cardiovascular research at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. He holds a Ph.D. and MD from Gothenburg University. Prior to joining Karolinska Institutet Professor Hansson was a Professor of cell biology at the Gothenburg University.
His work has been published in a number of leading academic journals, including Nature, Science, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, Journal of Experimental Medicine and Circulation.
The research of Göran Hansson deals with immune and inflammatory mechanisms in atherosclerosis, the major underlying cause of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. The research group of Göran Hansson has discovered that the atherosclerotic plaque is the site of an inflammatory/immune response involving activated T cells and their cytokines. This process appears to be enhanced in individuals with chronic inflammatory diseases, who have an increased incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Recent findings of atheroprotective as well as proatherosclerotic immune mechanisms may open up new opportunities for prevention and therapy.
